Dominic Streatfeild-James has spent a large part of his life on the move, having lived and travelled extensively in Europe, North America and Asia.

After leaving Charterhouse he became a naval officer, serving in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean where he particularly distinguished himself by losing HMS Gloucester 's anchor in Portland Harbour.
Resigning in 1989 he went up to King's College, London, graduating in 1992.

In the following year he researched and wrote Silk Route by Rail , the first guide to this new rail route through the Central Asian cities of Bukhara and Samarkand to the ancient Chinese capital of Xi'an. He also updated the third edition of Trans-Siberian Handbook for Trailblazer before retiring to write Cocaine – An Unauthorized Biography for Virgin and to produce documentaries for the Discovery Channel.
